Germany's new energy rules — §14a EnWG & §9 EEG, explained (and where Alva fits)

Two new rules are reshaping how German homes connect to the grid. One lowers your grid fees in exchange for a little flexibility. The other lets you keep more of what your solar panels make. Here's the short version — and what each one means for your home.

If you own a heat pump, an EV charger, a home battery or solar panels, both are worth two minutes of your time.

§14a EnWG — lower grid fees for a little flexibility

Have a controllable device over 4.2 kW, like a heat pump, EV charger or home battery? Under §14a EnWG, your grid operator can briefly dim it when the local network is busy. It can never switch the device off — and in return, your grid fees drop.

You choose how the saving lands: a flat reduction of roughly €110–190 a year, or up to 60% off the grid-fee share of what that device uses. Either way it keeps running. It's only ever turned down, never off, and only when the grid genuinely needs it.

This is where a smart controller earns its place. Alva Link keeps your devices optimising within the rules — so you capture the lower fees and barely notice the dimming.

§9 EEG — keep more of what your panels make

Since February 2025, new solar systems without a smart meter and control unit are capped at 60% feed-in. That means up to 40% of what you could sell back to the grid is simply left on the table.

Set up correctly — with the smart meter and local control these rules call for — the cap comes off, and your system keeps earning from every sunny hour.

Alva Link adds exactly that local control, so you don't give up generation you've already paid for.

Will Alva Link be ready?

A lot of you have asked the same question: will Alva Link actually be ready for these rules? It will. The interfaces are already built into the hardware, so readiness arrives as a software update — not a new device you have to buy again.

And to be straight about it: there's no official "§14a certificate" to chase — none exists yet, for anyone. What counts is correctly supporting the EEBUS standard the rules are built around, and that's exactly what we're building toward. We'll tell you the moment it's verified.

What it adds up to

Both rules point the same way: homes that can flex a little are rewarded, and homes that can't leave money on the table. Alva Link is built to handle that for you in the background — quietly, automatically, and within the rules.
