In short: Alva Link is designed and developed in Norway by Alva Technologies at Oslo Science Park. The circuit board and enclosure are in their final revisions, the enclosure is made with the Norwegian plastics manufacturer Beform, and first deliveries are planned to start in Q4 2026.
We write a lot about what Alva Link does. This post is about how it gets made. Hardware is slow, physical and full of small decisions, and the people waiting for it deserve to see them.
What is Alva Link?
Alva Link is a small wall-mounted device that connects to your home network and talks to the energy equipment you already have: heat pump, solar inverter, home battery, EV charger and water heater. It uses electricity prices and your own solar production to coordinate when each device runs.
It is not a battery or a heat pump. It is the layer that lets those devices work as one system instead of four separate apps.
- Size: 120 × 80 × 40 mm, 275 grams, wall-mounted with screws.
- Power: USB-C, 5 W.
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz), with Bluetooth for first-time setup.
- Protocols: Modbus TCP/IP, Modbus RTU, OpenTherm, SG-Ready and OCPP.
- Smart home: works with Home Assistant and Homey. Matter support is planned.
Step 1: the circuit board
Everything Alva Link does runs through one printed circuit board (PCB). It has to speak several protocols, handle wired connections to heat pumps and inverters, and keep running on schedule if your internet drops.
In spring 2026 our engineering team locked the PCB design. The first physical prototypes came in-house, and the first revision (RevA) was tested and performed as expected. Since then, each revision has gone through another round of testing before the next one is ordered.
Step 2: the enclosure
A device that hangs on a wall next to your heat pump or in your hallway has to look like it belongs there. The enclosure design was finalised before tooling, and we spent time on the material choices so the device looks and feels as good as it works.
Tooling is the point of no return in hardware. Once a mould is cut, changing the shape is expensive and slow. That is why we finalised the design first and only then moved into production tooling.
Step 3: choosing a production partner
For the enclosure we partnered with Beform, a Norwegian plastics manufacturer that also produces for brands like Voss (the bottles) and Swix (cross-country ski gear).
Our team visited their factory earlier this year. We came away impressed by the setup and the attention to detail at every step, which is what a product that sits in people's homes for years needs.
Where is Alva Link now? (October 2026)
- Enclosure: we are working through the final trial revision of the cast plastic parts.
- Electronics: the final PCB revision is in its last round of testing, receiving the needed certification.
- App: we are fine-tuning the app integration alongside the hardware.
Seeing the enclosure and the internal boards come together is a big step. It is also the stage where the small things get fixed, like fit and finish.
Built with Early Birds
More than 4,000 homeowners have joined the Early Bird list, and a lot of what we build comes from them. We have run surveys, talked directly with early sign-ups, and collected questions about brands, installation and how many Links a home needs.
Those questions shaped the product page and our Help Center, and they shape what we test. When someone tells us their brand is missing, we check it.
What happens next?
First deliveries are planned to start in Q4 2026. Early Bird members hear about every milestone first, including when units are ready to ship.
Frequently asked questions
Where is Alva Link designed?
Alva Link is designed and developed in Norway by Alva Technologies AS, based at Oslo Science Park (Forskningsparken) in Oslo.
When will Alva Link ship?
First deliveries are planned to start in Q4 2026. This is a plan, not a guaranteed date for each order. Early Bird members get updates by email.
What does Alva Link connect to?
Heat pumps, solar inverters, home batteries, EV chargers and water heaters, through Modbus, OpenTherm, SG-Ready and OCPP. Support depends on your exact model and connection, so check your setup on the product page or ask us in chat.
Does Alva Link work without the internet?
Control runs locally, so your devices keep running on schedule if the internet drops. An internet connection is needed for price and weather based optimisation.
