Do I need an electrician to install Alva LINK?

No. Alva LINK is designed for self-installation. No electrician, no wiring inside panels, no opening your heat pump's enclosure.

Here is the complete installation process

  1. Mount LINK on the wall — near your energy asset (heat pump controller, inverter, or EV charger). Use the included adhesive pad or two screws. The device is compact and light.
  2. Connect the power cable — plug the included USB-C cable into LINK and the power adapter into any standard outlet.
  3. Connect to your energy asset — run a single Ethernet cable (for Modbus TCP/IP) or RS-485 cable (for Modbus RTU) from LINK to your device's communication port. This port is typically on the outside of the asset's controller unit, accessible without tools. For SG-Ready heat pumps, two wires connect to clearly labelled terminals.
  4. Open the Alva app — LINK broadcasts a Bluetooth signal that the app detects automatically. Select your Wi-Fi network, enter the password, identify your device type and model, set your comfort preferences. Done.

Total time: 5–15 minutes depending on cable routing. No exposed mains wiring. No CT clamps around live conductors. No eBUS adapters inside heat pump enclosures.

Why this matters: The most common installation failures reported across competitor products involve physical wiring errors — CT clamps on the wrong phase (myenergi's #1 support ticket), eBUS connector wiring inside heat pump casings (tado°), and professional-install-only requirements (1KOMMA5° Heartbeat). Alva LINK sidesteps all of these by connecting through standard data ports that energy hardware already exposes for external communication.

When you would need an electrician

  • If your energy asset doesn't have an accessible port like Modbus or SG-Ready port and needs one added — this is a rare hardware modification best done by a technician familiar with your specific equipment

For Alva LINK itself, the answer is: you can do this. The app guides every step, confirms each connection, and validates that LINK is communicating with your device before completing setup.
