Autopilot required

Because there's no way to read your car's battery level over a cable. Unlike heat pumps and solar inverters, which support local protocols like Modbus, electric vehicles only share their data through manufacturer cloud APIs. Accessing these APIs costs Alva real money on every call — they're one of the clearest cost-justified elements of the Autopilot subscription.

Without Autopilot, Alva Link can still control your EV charger locally (start/stop, power limits, time-based scheduling) using OCPP or Modbus. You just won't get SOC-aware features like "charge to 80% by 7 AM at the cheapest rate."
